Can I Dual Boot Xp And With Windows 7 From My External Hard Drive?

I have only 10gb of space left on my laptops hard drive with XP on it. Can I install Windows 7 on my external hard drive, and dualboot that way?
My external hard drive also has files on it so I’d rather it not be formatted by installing Windows 7 on it, if that’s possible?

it needs to be Internal you need to upgrade your laptop hard drive it wont install on a external one.
